William Overton emigrated from his native England to Virginia before November 24, 1670, on which date he married his English sweetheart upon the vessel, still anchored at Yorktown, on which she arrived with her nurse. The Overtons were adherents of Cromwell, and the Waters were Royalists. The Royalists nearly caught William, but Elizabeth’s nurse hid him, then persuaded her nephew, a ship’s captain, to bring him to Virginia. On the captain’s next trip to Virginia, he brought Elizabeth and her nurse. After marrying, they settled at New Kent County and had issue.
