William Byrd Family File CD

William Byrd emigrated from his native England, according to some about 1670.  This was just in time for him to become involved in Bacon’s Rebellion, as it developed in 1676. There is a difference of opinion of just how involved he became in the rebellion, but it seems quite likely, since he escaped the fate of Drummond and Lawrence, that he was wise enough to get out before losing favor with Governor Berkeley. He settled at “Belvedere,” in Henrico County after marrying Maria Horsmanden, later moving to his plantation in Charles City County, “Westover.” He died in England in 1704, leaving issue.
