Thomas Graves Family File CD

Captain Thomas Graves emigrated from his native England to Virginia in 1608 in the ship, Mary & Margaret, when he was about 28 years of age. Not long after his arrival in Virginia, he was captured by the natives while exploring the wilderness, and taken to Opechancanough, the brother of the Emperor of the Algonquin Indian tribes that occupied Virginia territory, Powhatan. Graves was held for ransom, and the Indian interpreter, Thomas Savage, was sent to bring him back. He lived through the “starving time” and the terrible Indian massacre of 1622/23, serving as Burgess for Smythe’s Hundred in 1919, and as Justice of Accomack County in 1635. He married Katherine (surname unknown) who had emigrated from England to Virginia in 1616. They eventually settled in Accomack, where they raised their family. Captain Graves died about 1636, leaving his wife and several children.
