John Rolfe is more famous for his marriage to the Indian Princess, Pocahontas, than for his introduction of tobacco as a staple crop for the English colonies. He left his native England with his expecting first wife on the ship Sea Venture in May of 1609, was among those stranded at Bermuda for nearly a year due to a storm, arrived in Virginia in 1610. He settled at Jamestown, later removing to Bermuda Hundred where he died in March of 1622/23. Although possible that he was a victim of the Indian massacre of that month, it is also likely that he died of natural cause, since he made his will twelve days prior to the Indian assault, stating that he was “sicke in body.”
Rolfe married three times, having issue by each of his wives. The first child died in Bermuda shortly after her birth. By Pocahontas he left a son, Thomas, and Elizabeth, was the daughter of his third wife.
