Mary Alexander was born on November 26, 1756[1, 2] and died on May 18, 1837 in Walnut Spring, Henderson County, Kentucky, at the residence of Capt. John Posey[3]. George Thornton[4], her husband, died on April 30, 1781[3], killed in action during the Revolutionary War[5]. They resided in Spotsylvania County, Virginia[1].
George Thornton and Mary Alexander were married on October 9, 1773 in Stafford County, Virginia[1, 1, 6, 7, 8] by Rev William Stewart[9], in the St Paul’s Parish Church[7]. They had 6 children.
1. George Washington Thornton[1] was born on October 21, 1774[6] and died on November 6, 1776[6]. Baptised by Rev James Marye in St George’s Parish, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, Virginia[6].
2. John Alexander Thornton was born on January 6, 1776[6] and died on August 1, 1776[6]. Baptised by Rev James Marye in St George’s Parish, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, Virginia[6].
3. John Washington Thornton was born on March 28, 1777[6] and died on August 20, 1777[6]. Baptised by Rev James Marye in St George’s Parish, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, Virginia[6].
4. George Washington Thornton[10] was born on December 31, 1778[6]. He married Mary Goode Randolph on September 21, 1805[10] and died Abt. 1815[10]. Baptised by Rev James Marye in St George’s Parish, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, Virginia[6]. Resided in “Rumford,” Stafford County, Virginia[10].
5. Reuben Thornton[1] was born on October 21, 1780[6]. Baptised by Rev Thomas Thornton[6].
6. Lucy Frances Thornton[1] was born on December 5, 1781[6]. She married John Posey on January 25, 1798[11]. She was baptised by Rev Thomas Thornton; Godfathers: Col Ball, Col Wallis, Francis Thornton, Jr, Abraham Naury, Phillip Thompson, Strawther Jones. Godmothers: Mrs Betsy Lewis, Mrs Fanny Jones, Mrs Fanny Ball, Melvina Thornton, Betsy Thornton, and Mary Thornton, her mother[6].
General Thomas Posey[1, 6, 12] was from 1813–1816 Governor of Indiana[13]. He died on March 18, 1818 near Shawneetown, Illinois, at the seat of his son-in-law[3].
Thomas Posey and Mary Alexander were married on January 22, 1784 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia[14, 7] by Rev Stephens[15]. They had 11 children.
1. Martha Ann Posey married John B Cabell on April 25, 1839[14].
2. Mary H Posey married James Hall in February of 1823.
3. Fayette Posey was born on October 24, 1784[3].
4. Lloyd T Posey was born on June 16, 1786[3] and died on August 6, 1820[3].
5. Thornton Alexander Posey was born on February 21, 1788[3] and died on September 17, 1817[3].
6. William Churchill Posey was born on May 13, 1789[3]. He married Elizabeth Jane Dixon on May 10, 1829[14].
7. Thomas L Posey[14] was born on March 29, 1791[3]. He married Lure Campbell on July 13, 1826[14].
8. Elizabeth Maria Posey[12, 13], known as Eliza, was born on August 26, 1792 in Virginia[16]. She married Joseph Montfort Street on October 9, 1809 in Western View, Henderson County, Kentucky[17]. She died on February 2, 1846 in Agency, Iowa[5].
9. Dr. Alexander H Posey, a physician [14], was born on September 20, 1794[3]. He married Jane S Dixon on January 8, 1846[14].
10. Addison T Posey was born on September 13, 1796[3] and died on August 1, 1797[3].
11. Sarah Ann Thornton Taliaferro Posey was born on August 20, 1800[3].
