Major Lewis Burwell was born in 1621 in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, England, the son of Edward Burwell of Bedforshire and his wife, Dorothy Bedell of Catsworth. He emigrated from England to Virginia in 1640 and settled in Gloucester County where he established his estate, "Carter's Creek." He married Lucy Higginson before 1652 and died on November 19, 1653 and was buried at "Carter's Creek," Gloucester County, Virginia. He left one son, another Lewis Burwell.
