John Rolfe is more famous for his marriage to the Indian princess, Matoaka (better known as Pocahontas), than for his introduction of tobacco as a staple crop for the English colonies. Yet, both were equally responsible for the success of the infant colony. He left his native England on the ship Sea Venture in May of 1609, and was among those stranded at Bermuda for nearly a year due to a storm, before arriving in Virginia in 1610. He settled at Jamestown, later removing to Bermuda Hundred where he died in March of 1622/23. Although it is possible that he was a victim of the Indian massacre of that same month, it is just as likely that he died of natural cause, since he made his will twelve days prior to the Indian assault, stating that he was "sicke in body." John Rolfe was married three times, and had issue by each of his wives. The first child died in Bermuda shortly after her birth. Her mother is supposed either to have died in Bermuda at that time, or early after her arrival in Virginia. The percentage of women dying during or soon after birth in that era being what it was, I would lean more towards her having never left the island. By Pocahontas he left a son, Thomas. Elizabeth, his daughter, was the child of his third wife.
