Major Francis Dade, son of William Dade of "Tannington," County Suffolk, England, emigrated from his native country to Virginia under the assumed name of John Smith, and did not resume his true name until near the end of his life. No reason could be discovered for this alias, and since he died at sea in 1662 on a return trip from England at which time he was going by Dade, there were apparently no charges against him in Britain. Therefore, it is assumed he was probably involved in some royalist plot and had to flee his native country and could again use his true name after the Restoration. Whatever the case, as John Smith he settled in Northumberland County and married a native Virginian, Behethland Bernard and raised a family. As stated he died in 1662, leaving issue and a nuncupative will.
The Francis Dade file includes information on 1509 descendants with 321 different surnames.
